I'm contemplating getting some of this yarn but some ribbon type yarns can be heavy when knitted up. Has anyone used this yarn, how is it when knitted up, soft or rough? I'm hoping someone can help!

Hi joeybabe I've bought some of this Patons Reef but havent knitted it up yet. I haven't even taken it out of the packaging yet but will look at it and get back to you. To be honest I think it will be ok, it certainly doesn't look heavy. Will let you know. Janeym

Hi Janeym, thanks for your help. That'd be great if you don't mind.

Hi Joey, I've just got out a ball of Reef to try it for you. It is a ribbon yarn and half a centimetre wide (I measured it on a pattern). Half of the ribbon is shiny and half dull and it's variegated slightly (I chose the Rum & Raisin) but it knits up lovely on 5 mm needles and is not at all heavy. Kemps also have the patterns to go with it and quite a few to choose from as with the yarn. Now I can't wait to knit it up but will have to force myself to put it away as I have far too many "ongoing projects" taking up all my needles. Hope this helps. Let me know what you choose. Janie

You are very welcome and thanks for coming back to me. I hate it when you reply to someone and they don't get back to you. I picked the last pattern on page two 3565, and it was only 49p as well! The tension on this yarn is 20 sts and 27 rows to 10 cm stocking stitch on size 5mm needles which may help you as well as you may have another pattern you could use. I have had to put it away though as I have at least 4 projects 'on the go' at the moment! My latest fad is trying to knit socks on 4 needles but haven't had much luck yet as I have never tried before and I can't 'see' it. Hope all this helps. Janie

I have started knitting socks on a circular needle and do not turn the heel just knit a thin tube then shape for toe. Its quicker and easier. I have always struggled with four pins.

Hi I bought a Sirdar pattern for socks on two needles, not circulars, and I can't do that either. Ah well, I will have to persevere! Thanks for replying.

HIYA !--I HAVE LOADS OF RIBBON TYPE YARN INCLUDING THE ONE YOU MENTION AND THEY ARE NOT HEAVY TO KNIT -----HOWEVER.......THEY DONT HAVE MUCH ELASTICITY SO WATCH OUT FOR THE WELTS AND DONT PULL OUT OF SHAPE WHEN YOU WASH IT DRY FLAT OT IT WILL GROW AND GROW !! THE COTTON AND BAMBOO RIBBONS FEEL LOVELY AGAINST THE SKIN AND GOOD FOR HOT WEATHER AS THEY BREATHE.THEY ARE GOOD FOR TOPS AND CROP TYPE GARMENTS BUT NOT SO GOOD FOR BIG JUMPERS ETC HAVE FUN
