Are there any general rules about what you get if you use, say two threads of 4ply at the same time?

I mean does 2x 4ply = DK(ish), 3x 4ply = Aran(ish) etc?

Thanks in advance

I am not aware of any general rule. This link may be of help to you, although it appears to be written by an American http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100207102859AAerdEz
