I've just exchanged some 4ply wool for dk through the post but the dk that has arrived looks just like the 4ply. How do I tell the difference? ps. the dk has 4 strands of thin wool wound together.

I've always believed that Dk should be about 2x the thickness of 4ply. Maybe the twisted nature of the yarn will give you this. Try a tension square.
