HI there, for cushion covers the simplest of all patterns is to knit two squares and sew together or make one slightly longer so can flap over adn have buttons or tie ons.
http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/ This is one of the best sites for free online patterns to get you started and here is the page of pillows and cushions http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/directory/pillows.php.
As to multi-coloured there are many wonderful yarns out there, if you want to try it out first try strips of colours of normal DK knitting wool, if want extreme luxury I highly recommended NorO (search for in Google or Ebay) a beautiful yarn with variegated colour. Also have a look on Ebay as you may grab a bargain on beautiful yarn for a lot less then your local yarn store. Hope this helps, if you wanted certain recommendations of yarn please dont hestitate to contact me, amy x
